The 2 to 3 month rule
On most social platforms a post is seen in its first day or two. Pinterest works more like a search engine. People look for their next holiday, renovation or dinner menu well before it happens, and pins keep appearing in those searches for months.
If you wait until December to publish Christmas ideas, most of the planning searches are already over. Accounts that do well with seasonal content publish Christmas pins in September and Halloween pins in July.
Three habits for seasonal pins
Make new pins for old posts
Last year's gift guide still works. Give it new pin images, titles and descriptions and publish them ahead of the season.
Batch the work
Run the planner once a month, make all the pins for the next season in one sitting and schedule them across several weeks.
Keep pinning through the peak
Start early, but do not stop. Keep adding pins until a week or two before the event to reach late planners.
How to plan seasonal pins
-
Step 1
Enter your niche
Type the topic you pin about, such as "vegan recipes", "home decor" or "kids crafts", and pick one of six languages.
-
Step 2
Get a plan for today's date
The planner looks at the current month and lists 4 to 5 topics to pin now, which peak in 2 to 3 months, and 4 to 5 that come next.
-
Step 3
Pick from 5 content ideas
You also get 5 specific ideas for posts or pins that fit the topics to pin now. Copy any line with one click.
-
Step 4
Make and schedule the pins
Publish pins for the "pin now" topics this week and start preparing content for the next group.
Frequently asked questions
When should I start pinning seasonal content on Pinterest?
Start pinning seasonal content 2 to 3 months before the event or season. People use Pinterest to plan ahead, and new pins need weeks to be picked up in search. That means Halloween pins in July and August, and Christmas pins in September and October.
Why does Pinterest need content so far in advance?
There are two reasons. People search early because they are planning purchases, menus and projects. And pins build reach slowly through search and saves rather than in the first hours after posting, so a pin published a week before a holiday has little time to be found.
When should I start pinning Christmas content?
Start publishing Christmas pins in September and keep adding new ones through October and November. Gift guides, decor and baking ideas are searched from early autumn. By December most planning searches have already happened, so pins published then mostly help next year.
Can I reuse last year's seasonal pins?
Yes. Seasonal pins come back each year because the searches come back. Check that the links still work, then make new pin images for your best seasonal posts and publish them 2 to 3 months ahead, since Pinterest favours new pins over repeated saves of old ones.
Does the planner use live Pinterest trend data?
No. The plan is generated from your niche and today's date using the 2 to 3 month planning pattern. It does not pull numbers from Pinterest. To confirm a topic, look it up in Pinterest Trends, which shows when searches for a term rose in previous years.
What does the seasonality planner give me?
Each plan has three lists: 4 to 5 topics to pin now, 4 to 5 topics that start trending in 1 to 2 months, and 5 specific content ideas. You can run it twice a day without an account, in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian or Portuguese.
